About
I see my work as a whimsical and optimistic expression. The subject matter of my art is usually bubbling with enthusiasm. I’m influenced by both eastern and western culture, mixed with whatever is conjured by my imagination.
Even though my original roots are Chinese, I was born and raised in Malaysia–a tropical rain forest city. Growing up in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-lingual city made me more open minded at an early age. My passion for drawing led me to Singapore Nanyang Fine Art College on a full scholarship. After only a year and a half, I finished my first communication art degree.
After Singapore, my inquisitive attitude fed my journey for learning. The city’s multitude of western influences fostered a fascination with pop culture, music, movies, fast food, urban lifestyle, etc. Soon, I wanted to learn to speak English and move to Australia.
In 2001, I moved to the United States, where I attended the Memphis College of Art. I received a degree in Fine Art and design in 2004. I currently work as an art designer at the mid-south’s largest ad agency, archer>malmo.
I’m always discovering different media to use–such as watercolor, charcoal, ink, acrylic, wood stick, silkscreen and even digital. My current media includes using needlework and cutting felt in organic art forms, to present the trends of my emotions with nature, animals and society. Cutting up the shape forms in my drawing comes from my design background. The basic ideas are simplified into shape, negative space and complex thoughts in one drawing throughout my experiences.
